Throat concerns we assess

Throat symptoms can have different causes. An assessment considers your symptoms and medical history before treatment is recommended. Concerns discussed at London ENT include:

  • Persistent or recurrent sore throats and tonsillitis.
  • Hoarseness, changes in the voice and vocal cord concerns.
  • Difficulty or discomfort when swallowing.
  • A feeling of something in the throat, often called globus.
  • Persistent throat clearing, irritation or cough.
  • Lumps in the neck or concerns about the throat.

Read more about tonsillitis and sore throats, voice problems and throat symptoms. These guides provide general information and do not replace an individual assessment.

When to seek medical advice

Do not wait for a routine private appointment if symptoms need urgent attention. For a sore throat with difficulty breathing, inability to swallow, drooling or severe symptoms that are worsening quickly, call 999 or go to A&E. Seek GP advice if a sore throat has not improved after a week or keeps recurring. See the NHS sore throat guidance for advice on when to get help.

What happens at a throat consultation?

Your consultation includes a discussion of your symptoms, how long they have been present, your medical history and any previous treatment. Bring a list of your medicines and details of relevant tests or referral letters.

Professor Chatrath will assess your concerns and explain whether further examination or investigations are needed. A flexible nasendoscopy may be discussed where appropriate to examine the throat and voice box. Ask what any proposed examination involves, whether it can take place at that appointment and what it will cost.

The next steps depend on the findings. Treatment, further tests, monitoring or referral to another service may be appropriate. Surgery is not needed for every throat problem. If a procedure is recommended, its benefits, risks, alternatives and recovery should be discussed before you decide. Our tonsillectomy guide explains one of the procedures that may be considered for selected patients with tonsil problems.
